Honda CR-V e:FCEV to challenge Pikes Peak Hill Climb

The CR-V e:FCEV will be the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to attempt to summit the historic mountain race.

  • Historic hydrogen debut at Pikes Peak: Honda will enter the Honda CR‑V e, its hydrogen fuel cell version of the CR-V, in the 2025 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. It marks the first-ever hydrogen-powered vehicle to compete in the “Race to the Clouds”.
  • Vehicle specs: The CR-V e combines a front electric motor, two high-pressure hydrogen tanks, and a plug-in rechargeable 17.7 kWh battery. It offers about 435 km of total driving range and 47 km of pure battery-electric range.
  • Production and availability: This model began production on June 5, 2024, at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio. It’s leased exclusively in California due to hydrogen infrastructure requirements, with leases including hydrogen fuel credits.
  • Strategic significance: Honda sees hydrogen fuel cell vehicles as a long-term evolution beyond traditional internal combustion, positioning the Pikes Peak entry as proof of the technology’s performance potential on a demanding, high-altitude course.

The historic Pikes Peak race begins June 22, 2025.
