Mitsubishi to Launch EV Based on Nissan LEAF

On May 7, 2025, Mitsubishi Motors announced plans to launch an all-new battery electric vehicle (BEV) in North America in the second half of 2026. This new model will be based on Nissan’s next-generation LEAF platform, marking Mitsubishi’s second EV in the U.S. market following the i-MiEV. The vehicle will utilize the CMF-EV platform, which also underpins the Nissan Ariya SUV, known for supporting ranges up to 304 miles on a single charge.

This initiative is part of Mitsubishi’s “Momentum 2030” strategy, aiming to introduce a new or significantly updated vehicle annually from 2026 through 2030. The upcoming EV will be part of a diversified lineup that includes internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles, offering consumers a range of options.

Mitsubishi has not yet disclosed the name, technical specifications, or manufacturing location for the new EV. However, the company is considering domestic production to mitigate the impact of a 25% tariff on Japanese-made vehicles imported into the U.S.

Additionally, Mitsubishi signed a memorandum of understanding with Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s Foxconn, to develop another EV model for the Oceania market. This vehicle will be manufactured by Yulon Motor Co. in Taiwan and is scheduled for release in the second half of 2026. This collaboration aligns with Mitsubishi’s broader goal of transitioning its entire product lineup to EVs and hybrids by 2035.
