Nissan and SK On have announced a significant partnership to bolster electric vehicle (EV) production in the United States. Under this agreement, SK On will supply nearly 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of high-performance, high-nickel batteries to Nissan from 2028 to 2033, sufficient to power approximately one million mid-sized EVs.
These batteries are designated for Nissan’s next-generation EV models, which will be manufactured at the company’s Canton plant in Mississippi. The collaboration encompasses four new EV models tailored for the North American market, including two sedans and two SUVs.
This partnership marks SK On’s first venture with a Japanese automaker, expanding its footprint in the North American market. Currently, SK On operates a 22 GWh battery plant in Georgia and is constructing additional facilities in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee through joint ventures. Once operational, these plants are expected to boost SK On’s U.S. production capacity to over 180 GWh.
Nissan anticipates that this collaboration will ensure a stable supply of advanced batteries, supporting its electrification strategy and commitment to delivering high-quality EVs that meet customer demands.
