GSC Logistics, one of the largest transport operators in the San Francisco Bay area and one of the larger operators at the Port of Oakland, has fielded a batttery-electric big truck to haul drayage. It is the first truck to do so at the Oakland port and, if successful, will herald more to come.
The 10-ton rig was build based on BYD components for electric commercial vehicles and was acquired as part of a program to explore technology at the port and surrounds. GSC says that the truck will be used in short hauls over a three year trial, mostly carrying cargo containers to and from its depot and the Oakland terminals. The truck has a range of about 100 miles per charge.
The truck began operations in mid-February and has been consistently making four to five runs per day, putting it on par with the diesel-powered rigs it works alongside.
