Renault Group has announced that its Fireman Access system, a safety innovation for electric vehicles developed in collaboration with fire services, is now available to the global automotive industry under a free licensing policy.
This patented system enables emergency responders to extinguish electric vehicle battery fires in just a few minutes, significantly reducing intervention times compared to traditional methods. By offering this technology freely, Renault Group aims to enhance road safety worldwide and demonstrates its commitment as a partner of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety.
The Fireman Access system features an adhesive disc placed over an opening in the vehicle’s battery casing. In the event of a fire, a high-pressure water jet from firefighters dislodges this disc, allowing water to directly reach and cool the battery cells, effectively stopping thermal runaway. This approach not only shortens the time required to extinguish battery fires but also conserves water, using approximately 1,300 liters instead of the 11,000 liters typically needed.
To promote widespread adoption, Renault Group invites car manufacturers and parts suppliers to obtain a free license for the Fireman Access system through their open collaborative platform. Licensees are encouraged to share any improvements they develop, fostering a community dedicated to advancing vehicle safety.
