Scania, Europe’s largest large vehicle producer, has announced a new bus platform. The platform is a battery-electric bus capable of overhead recharging and long day uses. The platform, launched at Busworld, begins with a 4×2 low-entry city bus with batteries up to 520 kWh on board. It is expected to have a range of more than 500 km with that much power.
Scania plans to offer the platform in two performance steps: a four-battery variant with 416 kWh and a five-battery variant with 520 kWh. These will be available to Scania’s body builder partners for design and customization.
The batteries in the new Scania platform are made in partnership with Northvolt and are sustainably developed and manufactured. A new design for the batteries and management system allows faster charging. The bus platform is suitable for many types of transit buses as well as heavy-duty operations (Class I and II). Chassis widths include 2,500 mm and 2,550 mm. The platform can operate at 300 kW peak and 250 kW continuous.
