Toyota, Mazda Begin Testing EVs as Electrical Storage

The Sweep Energy Storage System is designed to rapidly toggle power flow to and from batteries—even when batteries of varying capacity or age are connected—making it highly adaptable and efficient.

  • Field Test Launched
Toyota and Mazda have begun field testing Toyota’s Sweep Energy Storage System at Mazda’s Hiroshima Plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.
  • System Overview
The test connects Mazda’s campus power generation system—the sole such system operated by an automaker in Japan—with Toyota’s battery-based system. These will be integrated via each company’s energy management systems to ensure efficient, stable charging and discharging.
  • Purpose & Future Use
The system aims to manage fluctuations in renewable energy supply (e.g., solar or wind) by regulating battery usage, helping to stabilize power supply and support carbon neutrality initiatives.
  • Building a Battery Ecosystem
This collaboration is part of a broader effort—identified as one of seven key mobility-industry issues by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association—to build a resilient battery ecosystem in Japan. The goal is the sustainable reuse of electrified vehicle batteries, ensuring resource sustainability and supply-chain stability.
  • Looking Ahead
Toyota and Mazda plan to continue advancing this multipronged, industry-wide strategy to achieve carbon neutrality and strengthen competitiveness across the automotive sector.
  • Renewable Integration: By leveraging repurposed EV batteries, this system helps balance power demand and supply, especially when renewable generation is intermittent (e.g., cloudy or low-wind periods).
  • Resource Circularity: Repurposing vehicle batteries contributes to circular economy goals and reduces reliance on new resource extraction.
  • Industry Collaboration: This joint effort underscores a collective push within Japanese automakers to advance sustainability and resilience in the energy and mobility sectors.
  • Strategic Alignment: Reflects Toyota’s broader “Beyond Zero” ethos—working not only to eliminate negative environmental impacts but also to create added value for society and the planet.
